With the approval of Perry Parish Council, a number of concerned residents and 2 Parish Councillors have set up an opposition working group to the London Luton Airport (LLA) Arrival Flightpaths Consultation. We have called the group Against Luton Airport Stack (ALAS).
You should now be aware that LLA has co-sponsored an Airspace Change Proposal and that a consultation process is in full swing. Individual consultation responses must be submitted by 5th February 2021, and Parish Councils must provide feedback to Huntingdonshire District Council on proposals by 15th December 2019.
In short, LLAs Consultation Document describes rerouting flights into and out of a new holding stack above our heads! Here is a link to the overview:
It looks like the new holding stack stretches roughly from St Neots around to Kimbolton, up to Buckworth and Alconbury and back down the A1 and around again. In other words the effect of this proposal is directly above 38 of our neighbouring villages and towns impacting approximately 50,000 people. The villages will go from nearly zero decibels of background noise to nearly 60 decibels of constant and multiple aircraft engine drone. Here is a link to an example of what one single aircraft could sound like:
We are sure you are not too dissimilar to ourselves many of us have been brought up in the area and many have chosen to live in this community for its rural setting, tranquil and beautiful environment, and clean air; unspoilt by urban influences.
LLA propose, above our heads, an average of 7 to 9 planes an hour, with peaks of 12 to 13 planes an hour at 7am in the morning, midday, and from 5pm to 11pm at night!!
This is the table LLA presents to illustrate the average number of arrivals per hour of the day (from 0001 to 2359), for the year 2019.
From virtually no planes above our heads currently, to a 2019 average of 157 to 218 per day, the noise of 1 plane at 8000ft is easy to dismiss but 200 plus a day is a constant noise. On 17 June 2019 between noon to 1pm, 24 planes arrived in 1 hour!
The whole point of the LLA plan is to increase capacity, 19 million passengers at first and in 10 years potentially doubling that. Just imagine how many more flights above our heads that will bring along with the noise, pollution and damage to our environment.
We are encouraging you to express your concerns to you at the Parish Council before the 15th December 2020.
This proposal does not have to go ahead, unless of course we do nothing. We are encouraging everyone, not just those of us under the proposed stack, to complete the Consultation Feedback Proforma and to have their say. We don’t have long; we have until the 5th February 2021 to have our say. Here is the link to the Proforma feedback form
We at Against Luton Airport Stack, a working group of residents, endorsed by Perry Parish Council would appreciate hearing if your Parish too is opposed to the London Luton Airports proposed change in flight path, to above our heads? We would also be interested to know what activities your Parish might be doing to support the community to engage in the Consultation process and would be very keen to work with you in opposing the proposed stack. We also wonder if you have any technical experts in your community – aviation, environment or legal – that may be able to support us on a pro bono basis? Sharing information rather than all of us reinventing a wheel could prove beneficial given we only have 12 weeks left to respond to the LLA proposal.
Our working group now has a website and social media presence, detailed below, and we would welcome you sharing details with your parishioners for them to join us.
We look forward and anticipate hearing from you soon.
